A Leaf from the Book of Cities

David Young, 2006
for clarinet, violin, viola, violoncello, tuba, pianoforte & percussion
Commissioned by the Ives Ensemble, Amsterdam
with the support of Arts Victoria

Commissioned by the Ives Ensemble, these two movements each take their title from Paul Klee paintings held in the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel. Klee's titles are among the strangest and most intriguing acts of naming in twentieth-century art. I have always held this piece precious and it is my small homage to Klee and his work.

I. A Leaf from the Book of Cities — after Ein Blatt aus dem Städtebuch, 1928
II. Cooling in a Garden of the Torrid Zone — after ARA "Kühlung in einem Garten der heissen Zone", 1924

Duration: circa 8 minutes.
